Jean-Paul Laumond Technological Innovation Liliane Bettencourt (2011-2012)
Jean-Paul Laumond is Head of Research at LAAS-CNRS in Toulouse. He is the leader of the Gepetto research group that works on the calculations that anthropomorphic movement in both humans and artificial systems are based on (humanoid robots and numerical models ). He teaches robotics at ENS. At the beginning of his career he was a Math teacher in High School, then he was awarded a PhD in Robotics for his thesis on robotics at Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, after which he joined the CNRS (French National Center for Scientific Research) in 1985. During the 1990's, he coordinated two European projects devoted to movement planning algorithms and their applications. In 2000, he contributed to creating Kineo Cam and was chief executive officer of the company for a two-year period. The company develops software components and is now firmly rooted in the sector of virtual prototyping for the automotive and aeronautics industries. He returned to LAAS-CNRS and between 2005 and 2008 co-directed the Franco-Japanese Laboratory, JRL, dedicated to humanoid robotics.
